What
is housekeeping?
- Housekeeping is the department that deals essentially with cleanliness and all ancillary service attached to that. Housekeeping plays an important role in the reputation of the hotels. One feels comfortable only in the environment which is clean and well ordered, so cleanliness is important for health foremost also for well-being. Hotel aims to make environment comfortable and offer specialized service to the guest.
A hotel housekeeping department has four
main functions:
- cleaning and maintenance
- training of its personnel,
- requisition and control of the necessary supplies and equipment
- Paperwork, schedules and reports.
Areas of responsibility:
- Housekeeper is: in a hotel who does or oversees the work of keeping house – except the kitchen and the related area (these are under the supervision of the steward).
The direct supervision of the housekeeping
includes generally eight areas:
- Guest rooms:
- Halls and corridors
- Lobby
- Public rooms and restaurants
- Offices (hotel personnel)
- Stairways
- Windows
- Stores, concessions, and other leased areas

Housekeeping Department Organization Chart:
- · The organization chart of housekeeping department should provide a clear picture of the lines of authority and the channels of communication with the department.
- · Housekeeping department chart not only provides for a systematic direction of orders, but also protects employees form being over directed. The chart shows that each employee should take orders only from the person directly above him / her.
- · Copy of the chart should be posted in an area so that all housekeeping staff can see where they fit into the overall organization of the department.

Ideally all hotels place the
organization chart on either the housekeeping control desk room or the place
where usually the daily briefing happens.
